Doctor of Philosophy:Hotel Administration

The Ph.D. program is a multi-conceptual and research-based degree program designed to produce top quality hospitality educators and researchers. The Ph.D. program is designed for persons interested in teaching hospitality management at the university level. The degree program is supported by the Ace Denken Co. Ltd. Endowment.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

The student must satisfy the following admission requirements of the Graduate College and the William F. Harrah College of Hotel Administration. Items 3-5 must be sent directly to the Graduate College . Items 6-11 are to be sent directly to the Hotel Graduate Studies Office.

1. Master's degree from an accredited institution with at least 24 credits in hotel administration, food service administration, tourism-convention administration, or a closely aligned field.

2. An overall GPA of 3.00 on a 4.00 scale for all work completed at the post-baccalaureate level.

3. Application form submitted on-line at-Download Form

4. A satisfactory TOEFL score of at least 600 for international students, unless the student received a baccalaureate or master's degree from a U.S. school.

5. Submission of official transcripts from all institutions attended after high school. All transcripts must be received directly from the schools attended.

6. The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) with a minimum score of 550 (only official scores will be accepted). Department code for the GMAT is 4986.

7. Three letters of recommendation, two of which must come from faculty members with whom the student has previously studied, evaluating the student's ability to perform at the Ph.D. level of study.

8. Second set of official transcripts sent to the Hotel Graduate Studies Office from all institutions attended after high school. All transcripts must be received directly from the schools attended. Transcripts must be sent to both the Graduate College and the Hotel Administration Department .

9. A statement of 500 words outlining what the applicant would expect to accomplish during the Ph.D. program and his/her particular research interest(s).

10. Current Resume (must have three years of managerial level work experience in the hospitality industry)

11 A master's-level thesis or the equivalent.

 

PH.D. DEGREE REQUIREMENT

1. Successfully complete the required core courses for the Ph.D. in Hotel Administration (12 credit hours).

HOA 779 Seminar on Issues and Trends in Hospitality Management (one credit each semester, to be taken for the first three semesters of coursework)

HOA 778 Readings in Hospitality Management

HOA 737 Philosophy of Science

HOA 762 Research Seminar in Hospitality Education.

Quantitative Methodology and Qualitative Methodology (9 credits)

HOA 736 Advanced Research Methodology

EPY 718 Qualitative Research Methodologies

Statistical Analysis (6 credits) - two courses from the following:

EPY 702 or Inferential Statistics and Experimental Design or

ECO 771 Advanced Statistical Modeling

STA 715 Multivariate Statistical Methods

STA 713 Experimental Design

Dissertation Credits (12 credit hours)

1. Must have at least 24 credits in the Hotel College (excluding dissertation credits) and 12 credits outside of the Hotel College . All credits must be from 700 level or higher courses.

2. Successful completion of all courses approved on the student's graduate program of study with a 3.00 or better. Any credits completed with less than a 3.00 may result in the student's termination from the program.

3. The student must file an approved degree plan before the start of the third semester after admission to the program. The degree plan must be developed in consultation with the student's Doctoral Advising Committee and approved by the student's Doctoral Advising Committee, the Doctoral Program Committee, and the Director of Graduate Studies and Research.

4. The student must successfully complete a preliminary examination designed to evaluate his/her ability to progress on to the dissertation. The examination will be given in two partswritten and oral segmentsand must be taken after completion of 80 percent of the approved program credits and within five calendar years of the admission date.

5. The student must successfully write and defend his/her dissertation program proposal and the completed dissertation. The dissertation must be of substantial quality and length, original in thought and research, and make a significant contribution to the body of knowledge in the field of hospitality administration. Upon approval of the Doctoral Advising Committee, the student will orally defend the dissertation before the committee and other members of the university and Community College System of Nevada graduate faculty. Upon successful completion of the dissertation and agreement by the student's Doctoral Advising Committee, the Doctoral Program Committee, and the Director of Graduate Studies and Research, the student shall present a seminar to interested students, faculty, and other persons reflecting upon the important elements and conclusions of the dissertation.

6. All students admitted to the program will spend the equivalent of two semesters completing an approved internship. The internship program may be completed by successfully teaching a course in the Wm. F. Harrah College of Hotel Administration at UNLV or by successfully completing an industry internship.

FACULTY

A critical component of the program is the faculty. The William F. Harrah College of Hotel Administration includes a faculty with both research and practical experience in all facets of the hospitality industry. Faculty members regularly publish both scholarly and applied research publications and consult with the industry on multiple operational problems and strategies. A number of the faculty have worked extensively in the area of hospitality finance and technology. Industry professionals with extensive experience will supplement the college faculty.
